Venus has one of the rarest retrograde cycles, retreating only 10% of the time on average from our geocentric perspective. It also has a five-pointed star pattern, with five retrograde cycles repeating their stationary points within a couple degrees in eight-year time periods. Each repeating point falls a few degrees earlier in the zodiac, with each point of the star taking approximately 100 years to retreat through a sign.
The last time we had Venus retrograde in Aries was March 8 – April 19, 2001 from 17/18 to 1/2 degrees Aries. This cycle finds Venus retrograde from March 6 to April 17, turning stationary retrograde at 15/16 degrees Aries and stationary direct at 29/30 degrees Pisces. With the exception of two weeks in Pisces (April 11 -24) Venus is in Aries for four months, a long time for this fast-moving inner planet.
Venus in Aries initiates an entirely new cycle of exploring our essential needs – in life and relationships. It creates a strong focus upon our self and what we want in our life, causing us to focus on any subject from our own perspective, or narcissistically. Venus relates to values, so a brand new cycle of what is important to us begins as well. Over the course of this next retrograde cycle, Venus in Aries makes three waxing sextiles to Jupiter in Aquarius and three waxing squares to Pluto in Capricorn. Our newly emerging value systems will be tempered by the current reality climate.
Aries always wants to jump in, jump ahead and just go for what it wants, action first. Venus retrograde in Aries necessitates that we look over to Libra – the polarity point – to consider other people and their values and needs as well as our own. It is not a comfortable spot, yet Venus naturally rules Libra so energy can move us in that direction. Still, Venus in Aries can get quite frustrated as changes will not seem to happen fast enough. Venus retrograde typically means “what about me and my needs?!”
