Sun in Capricorn (December 21, 2008 – January 19, 2009)
The solar month of Capricorn initiates the Winter Solstice and the return of the Sun in the northern hemisphere. For the next six months, daylight increases a few minutes each day while the dark of night decreases. This return of the Sun is the basis of powerful myths throughout history. Nothing replaces the life force we receive from the solar luminary in this physical plane.
The archetype of Capricorn calls us to review or determine our life purpose and accept responsibility for its actual manifestation. Many souls, however, feel they do not have much control over even their choice of work, let alone their life direction/purpose. If the understanding of our world is that power and security lie outside of us, then we can naturally feel quite powerless. We can feel battered around by the whims of others, needing to seek and find a way to control things in order to feel secure. Capricorn asks us to initiate a more mature approach to our inner and outer relationships, with society, and the outer world in general.
Sagittarius helped us to make sense of life; now Capricorn wants us to do something within that expanded point of view. Most people fulfill this inherent, universal need through a career function. Archetypal Capricorn wants to formalize points of view and philosophies into rigid entities called laws, thereby stabilizing Sagittarian expansion. This default Capricorn tendency to structure and consolidate can be quite necessarily appropriate. It can aid further goals by initiating the building of a structural foundation which can solidly sustain growth into the future (Aquarius). All groups of people must create rules, customs, norms and taboos in order to get along and continually function as a community or society. However, the risk is a resulting crystallization of life into a blanket of conformity such that there is no freedom left. Over time (Saturn), every society balances (Libra) the freedom to grow (Aries) with the need to abide by its customs and laws.
Souls who think that power lies outside of themselves do not feel free even if they live in a “free” society. A deeper lesson within Capricorn is taught by its polarity Cancer. All signs need their polarity in order to be whole and complete. The sign of Cancer represents emotional self-reliance. In balancing the Cancer/Capricorn polarity we learn to become totally responsible for our own emotional needs under any and all circumstances, personally as well as within society. This creates an inner sense of security regardless of what is happening around us and, ultimately, a realization that true power comes from within.
Physical well-being, Capricorn, comes from emotional well-being, Cancer. Inner emotional security matures into outer security within Capricorn. The inner world creates an outer world, as everything is connected to everything else – in holographic energy and therefore in manifestations. Knowing this, we can now accept responsibility for ourselves and everything we attract to us. We can grow up and mature in order to learn how to function within our communities, contributing in healthy ways. The Evolutionary Astrology mantra for Capricorn is: “I achieve my goals with emotional self-reliance.”
Some societies allow lots of freedom of choice in occupations. Other societies dictate what its citizens must do. In some societies these freedoms, or lack thereof, are based upon gender. The Capricorn-Cancer axis of the zodiac relates to gender and gender assignment. Capricorn is known as the father or masculine energies while Cancer correlates to the mother and feminine qualities. Each of us has both signs in our birth chart, regardless of our physical gender. We are all learning to balance the anima-animus within our own soul.
Capricorn tends to define gender roles by traditional means. It wants the masculine outer control, usually over the feminine gender as well as in every other area of life. Yet that outlook can crumble when the feminine emotions (Cancer archetype) are not part of the balance. Look at the gender distortions in every country of the world today.
Pluto’s transit from November 26, 2009 to November 20, 2024 through Capricorn will bring these gender role and gender equality issues to the forefront again and again. Somehow human consciousness will learn to accept and respect gender freedoms in the coming Aquarian Age. We will learn to love on a soul basis first, regardless of the gender, while nothing is taken away from natural gender roles.
When the need for Capricorn control crystallizes our life – relationships, career, beliefs, etc – evolving forces come along and break things up. We lose control. This is a deep desire with Capricorn, to be able to let go and lose control. This process usually means learning to access and acknowledge those deep emotions not in balance with our outer world. Capricorn likes to deny the emotional side of things, and yet evolution takes place through the emotional body. This can be one of the hardest lessons for Capricorn – denial of outer success until the emotional work is addressed.
We are effective in our careers when we bring our Sagittarian intuition along, which tends to operate through the emotions. How many times has the spark of genius just come out of nowhere? Healthy Capricorn energy gets in touch with that emotional realm and leads with it. We learn to reach into the depths of our own soul and develop healthy self-determination. We take charge of our lives with an inner sense of knowing that allows us to adapt and change with whatever happens in our outer world.
The Sun’s, and Jupiter’s, transitions from Sagittarius to Capricorn are mini examples (these two months and 2007-2008 respectively) of what we may expect through Pluto’s long, 15-year, transit in Capricorn. The days of Pluto in Sag (1995-2008) – more and more expansion like one big party that never ends – are crashing into Capricorn reality checks. The bubbles have burst. Nowhere do we see this more starkly than in the economic arena, worldwide.
The westernized world’s financial structures have been increasingly based upon mathematical wizardry with no connections to physical resources, the domain of Capricorn. Monetary supplies are paperless and in real danger of becoming meaningless. It will be an interesting ride through Pluto in Capricorn, especially when Uranus moves into Aries and makes its SEVEN first-quarter squares (crisis in action) to Pluto in 2012-2015.
The lesson is to re-prioritize our relationship with the outer world and material resources. It is in learning to live within our means, including financial ones, and in honoring all resources as sacred fruits of Gaia, planet Earth. The global community, Capricorn, is at a crossroads of social systems and structures based upon exclusiveness versus inclusiveness. Will we learn to love each other or destroy each other?
The self-responsibility journey of Capricorn will find collective groups balancing support for basic human rights with the need to mature. Many groups and organizations deplore government welfare systems while their financial systems are dependent upon keeping the public in perpetual debt. The distortions of the archetype of Capricorn are classic for creating extremes between the “haves” and the “have-nots.” When the lessons of more equitable social structures are not learned, Aquarius comes along with the famous rebellions and revolutions.
All of these lessons will be re-implemented through individual and collective soul desires via the Sun’s conjunction to Pluto on December 22 at 0/1 degree Capricorn, just after the Winter Solstice. It may be a sobering time, like a party hangover. It is not fated to be, only if we have over-indulged. Regardless, the annual Sun-Pluto reconnection allows us to start over in many ways.
Take a look at what is really important to you, relationships or stuff? You are free to have both. Yet the world’s support of separating energies – my religion is better than yours; my country, or race, or job, or house, or whatever, is better than yours – instead of connecting energies requires steep re-alignments for the vast majority of souls on the planet today.
Initiate self-responsibility with this Sun-Pluto conjunction. Evaluate the desires that are really important to you. Then ask how you may create meaningful re-connections with whomever is in your world. Once you achieve that, broaden your circle of inclusion even further, a natural Sagittarius principle. When we see ourselves connected to all other humans and species, as indigenous people do, then we will all survive and flourish.
The end of 2008 brings many opportunities for new beginnings. The New Moon of Capricorn on December 27 at 6/7 degrees is surrounded by: the ingress of Mars into Capricorn (December 26 – February 4, 2009), a Venus-Neptune conjunction the same day at 22/23 degrees Aquarius, and a Mars-Pluto conjunction on December 28 at 1 degree Capricorn. Start your New Years resolutions, and implementations, early.
The New Moon of Capricorn is a chance to initiate new goals with an integrated emotional interface. Access what is realistic for you. Do an inner check and see what feels good. Create an emotional feeling journey to match any action journey. Capricorn need not always be or even feel heavy. Remember back to what it felt like when you achieved a major goal in life. Milk the feeling into the future.
You can work this same process to your relationship with money and finances. What emotions come up for you around money? What were your familial, social and religious upbringings around money? Are you repeating any patterns? If you are wanting to change things, you must work the emotional side as much as or even more than the physical side - all signs need their polarity in order to be whole and complete.
Any upsets that come up in the future (Saturn retrograde on December 31st at 21/22 degrees Virgo) are manifestations of having energized related beliefs, thoughts and feelings in the past. We always have choice, within any and all moments to energize the initial reactions to any upset–or not. Awareness of active emotional energy allows for recognition of reality. Energy previously necessary to maintain denial efforts is then free for the creation of lemonade from any seeming lemons.
The ingress of Mars into Capricorn on December 26 and then its conjunction to Pluto on December 28 are powerful times to, again, implement self-responsibility in all areas of life. Mars makes aspects to the outer planets on two year cycles. Mars represents the conscious desire nature of the soul, acting upon the mostly unconscious desires of the soul, which come from Pluto. This is a two-year re-initiation of the desire nature within our own soul.
In Capricorn, the desire themes will be around work, money, goals in life, gender issues and family. The possibilities of desire within us are limitless. Where is current reality? What can you achieve in the next two years of your life? How self-responsible are you? Where do you take on responsibilities that do not belong to you?
Sexuality can also be a theme with Mars and Pluto. Capricorn, with its conditioning factors in order to be secure can also create conditioned judgments. The less we judge the easier our lives become. Natural sexuality has been so suppressed and distorted we rarely recognize it anymore. Mars-Pluto must be allowed to express its emotional-physical buildups, through sexuality or creativity, whatever each soul desires.
For some, Mars-Pluto conjunctions may represent the exhaustion of the separating desire nature in some way. We may release desires and needs for physical stuff that only momentarily satisfy us, and replace them with desires for more inner satisfaction. We may desire to know God/Goddess more deeply, perhaps as the Ultimate Source of everything. These are returning desires as in the wave that returns to the sea.
These types of ponderings may stem from the Venus-Neptune conjunction on December 27 at 22/23 degrees Aquarius, seven minutes after the New Moon. Interesting how this current reality checkup with the material world and finances comes with such inner growth potential. When the outer world gets tough, we search for inner meaning.
Venus and Neptune are the planets of love, the lower and higher octaves respectively. Venus wants the physical manifestations with another soul, and Neptune wants to re-connect with Source energy. Both are always present, yet we forget and split ourselves into one or the other. Religions re-enforce this split.
Natural spirituality shows us that we walk in two planes – physical and metaphysical – at all times. Somehow these planets are reminding us to condense love into physical realms in order to take it beyond that again in a new way. Venus-Neptune also takes us on the re-prioritization process to sense what is really important to us at this point in space/time. Saturn’s impending direction change in a few days, December 31, also emphasizes this process. Any New Year’s goals must be based upon re-prioritization themes.
Two weeks later, just before the Full Moon, the Sun makes a waning sextile to Uranus on January 9 at 19/20 degrees Capricorn-Pisces. This can be a surrender time to the emotions that bubble to the surface during Full Moons. Make the effort to remain in your body instead of any escapism tendencies. Search for the inner strength that is also known as your own inner guidance system. Exercise and meditation could help bring clarity to any messages coming through.
The Full Moon of Cancer is January 10 at 21 degrees Capricorn-Cancer. This can be one of the most depressing Full Moons of the year as reality strikes again. The holidays are over, and the Capricorn routine is back. We may either miss the family connections or realize the lack of them in our life. The loneliness may get to us if we are lacking in self-responsibility.
Pay attention to the themes with this Full Moon. The solution to Pluto’s long, 15-year transit through Capricorn is balancing emotional well-being via familial and cultural connections, Cancer. This particular Full Moon will show us mini-examples of our path through the next decade. Career must be in balance with family and relationships, not a substitute for them. Westernized societies appear to reward workaholism. No matter the rational sounding excuses, behavioral busy-ness detracts from creating and maintaining meaningful emotional connections within our self and within extended families.
The emotional body will reveal itself through this Full Moon. If your homeostasis is negatively-based on emotional levels, there are reality checks to address. Self-love is the starting point. The Sun makes a waxing trine to Saturn retro the following day, January 11 , at 21/22 degrees Capricorn-Virgo. We need to recognize that perfection does not exist on this physical plane – it is why we are here, to perfect.
Capricorn and Virgo can get really caught up in judgment games. Where can you replace judgments with discernment? Your love life may not be what you desire it to be, yet you are the best lover for yourself that you will ever have. Your job may not be exciting and glamorous, yet you have a job, find appreciation of it somehow. Saturn in Virgo is about shifting from a cup half-empty to half-full. Its newly retrograde status brings this into sharp focus.
Fear is real these days, and yet it is an emotional tool that makes us conscious. Create a rationalization process that takes you – step-by-step – from fear to possibilities to peace. The less we can judge any personal situations, and the more we can point ourselves in the directions we desire to go, the easier we will move through this re-prioritization process.
From January 9 to 14, the Moon opposes Pluto, Mars, Sun, Jupiter, Mercury, Neptune, Venus and Uranus – the emotional ah-ha’s can be tremendous. It is the emotional body that will lead the way through Pluto in Capricorn. Get to know yourself. Where is the focus of the next indicated step within your maturation process?
The Moon conjuncts Saturn retro in Virgo on January 14 after its oppositions to every other planet, allowing us a chance to implement new emotional realizations, thereby redefining a structurally self-integrated reality.
Mercury turns stationary retrograde on January 11 at 7/8 degrees Aquarius, right after the Full Moon. Frustrations may run high as the mental insights pop up yet we must walk through space/time reality. Breathe deeply. Even though we may want to jump into the future, we need to be in the present moment. Mercury retrogrades back into Capricorn to finish up old business.
Perhaps the holiday bills are coming due. There may be responsibilities we have tried to skip over. We just may not like our current physical limitations. Mercury retrograde in Aquarius will repeat its message until we hear it, and an objective viewpoint will be necessary somehow. Jupiter is only a few days into its year-long transit through Aquarius and the insights are quite strong. Yet human consciousness must make peace with the space/time continuum and “walk the talk.”
Make every effort possible to realize how your thought processes create your reality – consciousness creates matter. Mercury retro through Aquarius-Capricorn allows us to recognize this on evermore conscious levels, and then change our thoughts as necessary. This Mercury retrograde cycle teaches us that we cannot approach our problems or limitations the same old way and get different results. We must change our thoughts to create new realities.
This Capricorn solar month can actually be more exciting than usual. Shakeups can happen, and yet we can take advantage of the changes. Strengthen your inner world when physical limitations surround you. Your degree of inner security will determine the leaps of growth you can make.
May God/Goddess bless you through Sun in Capricorn.
December 22 – Sun conjunct Pluto at 0/1 degree Capricorn.
December 27 – New Moon of Capricorn at 6/7 degrees.
January 9 – Sun waning sextile Uranus at 19/20 degrees Capricorn-Pisces.
January 10 – Full Moon of Cancer at 21 degrees Capricorn-Cancer.
January 11 – Sun waxing trine Saturn retrograde at 21/22 degrees Capricorn-Virgo.
Saturn Stationary Retrograde (December 31, 2008)
Saturn’s annual four-month retrograde cycle starts December 31, 2008 at 21/22 degrees Virgo. It turns stationary direct on May 16, 2009 at 14/15 degrees Virgo. The highlight of this retrograde cycle is Saturn’s opposition to the Sun on March 8, 2009 at 18/19 degrees Virgo-Pisces. Saturn retro will also make the second of five oppositions to Uranus on February 5, 2009 at 20/21 degrees Virgo-Pisces.
The collective consciousness is now recognizing a daily routine based upon busy-ness and detail overload with Saturn in Virgo from September 2, 2007 through July 26, 2010 (minus a brief entry into Libra from October 29, 2009 to April 7, 2010). Saturn is the individuated consciousness, or how each soul structures its awareness of everything in the space/time continuum. During Saturn in Virgo, details and crises from the “to-do list” overload rule the day and night. As we move through the last half of December – Saturn slowing down – the details seem to be increasing even more. This is especially true if the contracting economic cycle finds us making our holiday gifts or cooking more meals at home to save money. Saturn in Virgo is showing us how precious time really is.
This Saturn retrograde cycle will be intensified by a Mercury (rules Virgo) retrograde cycle from January 11 – February 1 in Aquarius-Capricorn. The need to prioritize what is important in our daily routine is the message. Saturn retrograde in Virgo points to its polarity sign Pisces. Overload and overwhelm can lead to a desire for escapism. It creates a need to simplify. Today’s westernized world is an information overload (check your emails lately ) that necessitates creating peace in the midst of chaos. We can do this through daily routines of meditation, deep breath work and exercise.
Saturn’s changes of direction are reality checks. Saturn retrograde will show us the areas of life that are no longer working or going forward. It is time to review. In Virgo, Saturn will learn there is another way to accomplish its goals in life. We may be spinning our wheels or repeating the same patterns over and over. Virgo creates crises in order to bring about changes – to let go of whatever is no longer working.
This particular Saturn stationary retrograde at New Year’s can be utilized to create self-improvement plans. Those New Year’s goals in need of implementation must be repeated until successful. This is another Virgo theme, one foot in front of the other until we reach our goals. Saturn retro in Virgo must discern whether it is time to let go of certain actions, do them a different way, or just keep on truckin’.
The health themes of Virgo will re-surface. Health crises may arise as Saturn turns direction and throughout the remainder of its Virgo transit. We get to recognize on new levels that diet, exercise and rest – Virgo themes – make a difference in creating illness or creating wellness. Virgo is an earth sign ruled by Mercury: mental energy in the physical domain. Is the cup half-empty or half-full? Thoughts are things. Saturn retro in Virgo is a chance to change our left-brain, conditioned thought patterns that eventually condense into matter. It is opportunity to create lemonade out of those lemons in our life.
Another theme will revolve around the Virgo-Pisces archetypes of human-made conditionings such as religions, and the judgments created from these arbitrary standards of right/wrong conduct. Some, many or all of these default behavioral references are in direct contrast to the natural spiritual laws and principles which are observable in nature and therefore related to the archetype of Sagittarius (square to both Virgo and Pisces).
Saturn in Virgo can find us full of such artificial judgments, many of which are simply conditioned thought patterns internalized via religion, society and family. This retrograde cycle is a time to question the basis of our judgments and throw off those standards of right/wrong conduct that do not make sense to us anymore.
Saturn retro in Virgo is a time to search for the deepest connections to Universal Source energy, or God/Goddess. This is Pisces domain, and in natural laws this energy is inclusive. It is recognizing that everything is interconnected to everything else. Virgo frustration and overwhelm is answered by Piscean re-connections to God/Goddess. The whole is greater than the parts that make it up. This is the Pluto in Virgo lesson, and those souls born from 1964 through 1969 will feel this retrograde cycle impacting them to the depth of their soul. Self-forgiveness will be a major theme, along with self-love. Saturn’s two-plus year transit through Virgo demands that Pluto in Virgo souls create new realities.
Work and career is another possible theme through Saturn in Virgo. Virgo is the day-to-day details of work, the routines. We can get comfortable in those routines even when we do not like our jobs. There is nothing like a “pink slip” of losing your job to create a Saturn in Virgo reality crisis. It is important to remember that the purpose of crisis (Virgo) is to create self-improvement. The transits of Pluto and Jupiter into Capricorn have shaken up the economic patterns, and financial structures are in need of major changes. Individually and collectively, fiscal responsibility is the lesson. The current economic upsets will test our consciousness to the max, to remain calm and energize the directions we desire to create in the physical world.
Saturn will make five oppositions to Uranus from 2008-2010, with the second opposition happening on February 5 at 20/21 degrees Virgo-Pisces. This second aspect happens with Saturn retrograde, which means Uranus in Pisces will be able to shake up Saturnian realities even more. Saturn retro points to Uranus, both by aspect and by its retrograde nature of lifting the “veil” between the conscious and unconscious worlds. It is important to find quiet times to pay attention to the subtle, and maybe not so subtle, messages of Uranus in Pisces. We all need de-conditioning from the past in order to evolve and become our real, liberated selves. Collective groups will do the same.
Life is evolution. Saturn retrograde serves the purpose to further growth, even when we are kicking and screaming NO. Slow down and breathe deeply. Let your own soul consciousness guide you into the awareness of your new realities continually emerging. It is time for simplification into what is really important in your life.
December 31, 2008 – Saturn stationary retrograde at 21/22 degrees Virgo.
March 16, 2009 – Sun opposes Saturn retrograde at 18/19 degrees Pisces-Virgo.
May 16, 2009 – Saturn stationary direct at 14/15 degrees Virgo.
Jupiter in Aquarius ( January 5, 2009 – January 17, 2010 )
Jupiter moves into Aquarius on January 5, 2009 for its year-long transit through this forward-thinking sign. After its march with Pluto into Capricorn throughout 2008, this archetypal change will bring much needed fresh air! Even in the midst of contracting realities and budgets, Jupiter can intuit opportunities ahead. Watch for internet podcasts to explode as Jupiter in Aquarius gets its message out to the masses.
Our intuition, or right-brain and sixth sense, evolves and expands as Jupiter moves through the zodiac. Jupiter relates to the principle of growth as well, both positive and negative. In Aquarius, we may receive repeated messages about the future. Several things may be happening – leaping ahead or defending the past because we fear to change the status quo.
The archetype of Aquarius, ruled by Uranus, relates to the individuated un-consciousness. When Aquarius is activated the unconscious mind releases all kinds of information up into our conscious mind. This doesn’t happen in a nice a-b-c fashion though. We must make sense of the repeated messages that pop up again and again.
There may be messages related to the past - within both current and past lives, which we must process through in order to heal and liberate from the past. Aquarius also relates to the archetype of “shock and trauma” from events, which can create PTSD – post-traumatic stress disorder. The current economic upsets may be re-triggering financial stress of all kinds, collectively and individually. Souls may feel paralyzed.
When PTSD re-surfaces, Jupiter can bring about broader understandings to the old events. This can allow us to move on by recognizing the lessons we need to learn from painful events of the past. Many souls will experience old memories popping up into consciousness in order to heal. Jupiter can show us new ways to become more fiscally responsible, or hold healthy boundaries in relationships. We may recognize more natural spiritual principles which allow us to look at past hurts and heal them.
There may be messages related to the present space/time continuum that we would rather just avoid and suppress. Jupiter in Aquarius will not let this happen. Saturn retrograde in Virgo the first four months of 2009 may find us worrying and fretting more than usual about “what-ifs.” We may find ourselves feeling guilty for silly reasons. Jupiter will keep circling around the issues until we understand what is triggering us.
Jupiter rules Sagittarius, so its transit through the zodiac also evolves our understanding of natural spiritual laws and principles. We may recognize conditioned religious guilt (versus natural guilt) and find ourselves needing to break free – leaving our current religious practices – and questing for deeper answers. Some examples are religions that do not allow women to have leadership roles or that enforce celibacy. Natural spirituality embraces sexuality as a natural part of life, rather than pushing guilt if sex is enjoyed for anything other than procreation.
There may be messages related to the future that just surface into consciousness, again and again. The more these messages repeat themselves, the more likely it is that they are directions - from our own soul, pointing a way of natural soul growth. Issues arise when these messages are in stark contrast to current reality and security structures. (An example is seeing one self alone when in the midst of a marriage and diapers. ) In these cases, we ignore the messages until life explodes in our face. Today, this could be common in the arena of work and career. We sense ourselves doing something different and yet ignore the signs to make a career change. Our employer goes bankrupt.
Jupiter is growth and expansion, and sometimes Jupiter taketh away in order to create a void into which we can then evolve. Human consciousness creates security through consistency, so changes are not always welcome. Yet change/evolution is our only constant on the deepest levels. Jupiter in Aquarius always gives us the message of what is coming. The big question, how well are we paying attention?
There will be technological advancements through Jupiter in Aquarius, as well as spiritual leaps of growth. The two – spirituality (Jupiter) and technology (Aquarius) – may combine in various fashions. We can now attend church via TV and the internet. There is a “new age” movement in recognizing that “thoughts are things” or consciousness creates matter. The possibilities are endless, and entrepreneurialism will unfold in these areas.
More shopping will be done online, and international marketing via the web will get products all over the world. Jupiter in Aquarius can create an explosion in cyber-education, both traditional and alternative. Wikipedia – the free online, public-written encyclopedia – will become more accepted. Information overload will have some souls opting out of the web, or recognizing the need for boundaries.
The last time Jupiter was in Aquarius (1997) it made a conjunction to Uranus, and computers and the internet exploded into households. During its current Aquarius transit, Jupiter will conjunct Neptune three times as follows:
May 27, 2009 – Jupiter conjunct Neptune at 26/27 degrees Aquarius.
July 10, 2009 – Jupiter conjunct Neptune at 26 degrees Aquarius, both retrograde.
December 21, 2009 – Jupiter conjunct Neptune at 24/25 degrees Aquarius.
Spiritual revolution is a strong theme. The masses will start to get it that consciousness really does create matter. We live in a holographic universe. What we put our energy – beliefs, thoughts, feelings – manifests into our physical realities, both negative and positive. Over the long term, this will be extremely freeing – to recognize that we can create and control our future through our own consciousness.
To some this will be scary, especially those whose consciousness is caught up in conceptualizing outer forces of power telling them how to think and what to do. It could be threatening to human-made conditionings such as religions, if and when the masses realize they do not need an outside intermediary to save them. It could be exciting: like-minded groups of people creating new social structures based upon common beliefs and thought processes.
Jupiter in Aquarius could see mass contagions – collective stress as unemployment rises through the Pluto in Capricorn economic re-structuring, especially with Saturn still in Virgo. We may see grassroots uprisings re-addressing basic human rights, and including health care rights as well. Aquarius is an air sign so collective contagions could happen through air-born health scares. A common scenario would be some type of bio-warfare outbreak.
Even positive changes can be stressful. It will be important through Jupiter in Aquarius to de-stress on a regular basis through things like meditation, nature walks, healthy dietary practices, and consistent exercise routines. Even talking things through will help relieve stress. When Aquarius pops things up into consciousness, it can be so un-settling that it disrupts sleep patterns, re-enforcing the need for calming, de-stressing activities.
Friendships will become important again. Friends and family, family and friends – these are common themes for Jupiter in Aquarius and Pluto in Capricorn. Relationships will replace stuff. Community living will become hip again, with economic reasons as a driving force. Consensus Jupiter in Aquarius may draw lines in the sand between group differences and exclude. Evolving Jupiter in Aquarius – individuating and spiritualizing – will draw inclusive circles, manifestly honoring unity in diversity.
The Pluto in Scorpio generation (1983/84-1995) will experience crises in action from Jupiter making a first quarter square aspect to their natal Pluto. The “entitlement” generation will wonder if there will be enough resources to go around. They will learn to be better recyclers on the planet. Some are angry and may turn into another “war” generation. Some will create fantastic inventions.
The Pluto in Libra generation (1971/72-1984/84) will experience a first quarter trine aspect from transiting Jupiter. They will be the grassroots voice of social changes, supporting equity on many levels. They must guard against laziness, expecting others to create the relationship changes they wish to see in the world. This generation can be a guiding light towards peace, creating examples of how to overcome differences and get along with each other.
The Pluto in Virgo generation (1956/57/58-1971/72) will experience a waxing, gibbous phase inconjunct aspect from Jupiter. They are also feeling Saturn in Virgo bring about major reality crises in their lives from 2007-2010. This generation will feel the stress and worry about their careers. They can create more equitable health care as they rise into positions of leadership on the planet, and notice their own aging process. This is the internet generation and they must balance the mental overloads with spirit-based peace practices.
The Pluto in Leo generation (1936/37/38-1956/57/58) will experience Jupiter in Aquarius opposing their natal Pluto (which represents the soul). Objectivity is the major theme for them in all areas of life. Some will experience creative roadblocks as they are forced to look at a larger picture. Some will be creative dynamos on the planet. Their leadership role is not over yet. They are meant to lay the seed thoughts for the coming Aquarian Age by personally and collectively taking on the role of wise elder. Many will feel a sense of urgency about this. It is time for another ‘60s revolution, and this time, cosmically articulated as Pluto in Capricorn, passion must give way to maturity – to an inner knowing of when to fight and when to create peace. Global friendship is the message of a Leo Pluto wise elder resonating with Jupiter in Aquarius.
The Pluto in Cancer generation (1912/13/14-1936/37/38) will experience a waning, full phase inconjunct aspect from transiting Jupiter. Kicking and screaming, they must relinquish their power to youth. Many will not understand the rapid changes of the day. Those who have worked upon emotional self-reliance will still share their wisdom as they feel the march of transiting Pluto in Capricorn approaching opposition to their natal Pluto (a rare aspect reached around 120-125 years of age). Jupiter in Aquarius can be quite androgynous, and this “tradition at all costs” generation will still oppose many gender rights issues. They must create emotional peace and open-mindedness towards the future as they return to spirit world.
For the next year (January 5, 2009 – January 17, 2010) Jupiter’s consciousness expansion will explode in a variety of ways. Be as open to change as possible. When the repeating messages show up in your world, pay attention to them. They are your guiding lights through the changing times ahead. Find your courage to liberate from the past and be different. Be yourself, a unique creative spark of Source energy.
Mercury Retrograde Cycle (January 11 – February 1, 2009 )
Mercury’s retrograde cycles in 2009 will combine the elements of air and earth, meaning thoughts and ideas must be grounded in reality. The first Mercury retrograde cycle starts January 11 at 7/8 degrees Aquarius and ends January 31 / February 1 at 21/22 degrees Capricorn. When we combine Mercury’s shadow periods, we will feel its influence from December 26 (Mercury at 21/22 degrees Capricorn) all the way through February 21 (Mercury at 7/8 degrees Aquarius), two full months.
The shadow periods before and after a planetary retrograde symbolize the three passes a planet makes through degrees of the zodiac. The first passage is known to expose the themes that will be addressed through the actual retrograde transit, or second passage in reversing direction. The third and final passage over these same degrees - after the retrograde, offers resolution and understanding of what the lessons were all about.
With Mercury, the lessons revolve around the details of communications and left-brain processing. We are bombarded with information in today’s modern world. While Mercury retrograde in general points to the right-brain and a focusing upon what really matters in our world, Mercury retrograde in Aquarius simultaneously signals a time to throw off thoughts and details which are no longer important relative to an increasingly detailed vision of what we would like our lives to become.
We may consciously receive future-reorienting messages and seem unable to act upon them. It may be almost like we can taste an at once desirable and yet unattainable future. For various reasons unique to each of us, this seeming paradox may also mean we must review (retrograde) these flashing ideas and see if they are actually in our best interests. With Saturn also retrograde - in Virgo - as Mercury moves back into Capricorn, we must look at things from the most practical level possible.
This particular Mercury retrograde cycle also includes three conjunctions each from Mercury to both Mars and Jupiter. Ideas and action, ideas and action – which ideas will we act upon, and which ideas are better left for another time? This is the big quest. Three Mercury-Jupiter conjunctions show us that we must be whole-brained: the left-brain and right-brain must function as one. Mercury may be trying to push things forward via details. It’s time to slow down and conceptualize a larger picture; then we can consciously decide how to move into the future.
Mercury retrograde cycles in air signs tend to bring an overload of information leading to extra processing work and as a result missed signals. Aquarius is fixed air so we may be stubbornly clinging to our own point of view. Maybe it’s time to consider another perspective. Mercury in Aquarius can be the messenger delivering the mental shocks that force us to look at things differently. We may also remember a time from the past that upset us, the messages delivered now sparking a more objective awareness of that memory.
The highlight of this retro cycle is Mercury’s reversal back over the Sun on January 20 at 0/1 degree Aquarius. This is the time period, give or take a few days on either side, when the big ah-ha’s show up. We recognize a new mental understanding. We figure out a new thought process. We initiate a new communication style. This time, friendships could be in the picture via Aquarius. Mercury retrograde is known for re-connections with people from our past. Then again, maybe certain friendships have run their natural course. Or maybe it’s time for new friendships to be revealed.
Mercury’s retro passage back into Capricorn will also bring up finances and work, family and responsibilities. Though these are subjects that we tend to consider around this part of every year, this time they may require even more focus. Search for the ways you can be more self-responsible. Make time for those familial communications that have been avoided. Perhaps something came up at the beginning of Mercury’s shadow (Christmas time) and it needs to be re-addressed now. Make the effort.
Together, Mercury and Mars want action. The best actions may be verbal and mental. Think things through before jumping in to anything. It is a time for practicality and accessing what is real. If the Aquarian visions keep coming up, then a way will be made known for manifestation. When tighter economic cycles come around, we can surprise ourselves with how creative we can be on a shoestring budget.
Mercury retrograde cycles bring about a need for extra communications, as many times it takes repeated efforts to communicate the same issue until new understandings are reached. We do this internally with the thoughts in our head, externally with those in our lives. Talk it through, talk it out… until peace arrives.
This Mercury retrograde cycle will test those New Year’s resolutions and our long-term goals in general. We have a Solar Eclipse on January 25 really close to where Mercury went stationary retrograde. Allowing Mercury to be a part of the process, reviewing things when necessary, we create less work and better solutions in the long run. Make peace with Mercury retrograde — and give thanks for the new awareness arising within you. Mercury wants to be a part of your goal-planning and your successes.
